Iron, fire and a hammer: blacksmithing is one of the oldest crafts there is. At Quinta do Coito Grande, a forge keeps this knowledge alive and puts it to use.
Gates, railings, stairs, pergolas, tools and knives are designed and made by hand, combining traditional techniques with modern equipment. Every piece starts from a drawing, made for its purpose and for the person who will use it.
Alongside commissioned work, the forge is also a place to experiment with sculpture and decorative pieces.
The forge shares its building with other workshops, and the craftspeople work side by side, lending tools and skills to each other. The wish is to open it to courses, so that more people learn to make and repair their own tools.
